Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a key national university, which is jointly operated and administrated by the Ministry of Education of China and the Shanghai municipal government. It is selected as one of the top nine universities in the 985 Project, one of the key national initiatives to build world-class universities in China. With the socio-economic reform and the investment of the national initiatives, Shanghai Jiao Tong university has achieved unprecedented developments and regained its vigour and vitality. With solid sciences as bases, powerful engineering as core and distinctive disciplines as new development, such as economics, law, literature, agronomy, medicine and management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has become a world-renown and national elite university, desired by numerous students.

Guided and supported by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Postdoctoral Management office, China's postdoctoral Foundation and Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, as well as emphasized by the successive university leadership, the postdoctoral programs have made great progress in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Postdoctoral programs now includes studies in 28 areas-------control science and engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, power engineering and engineering thermophysics, mechanics, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, computer science and technology, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, basic medicine, stomatology, management science and engineering, physics, environmental science and engineering, nuclear science and technology, mathematics, instrument science and technology, biology, business management, foreign languages and literature, clinical medicine, chemistry, pharmacy, horticulture, optical engineering, civil engineering------covering 8 general disciplines such as science, engineering, management, law, economics, agronomy, and humanities. The 28 postdoctoral programs cover 78% of the major in the University. Since the first enrolment in 1985 and till the end of December, 2010, Shanghai Jiao Tong University as one of the first universities that establishes the postdoctoral programs, had recruited 1598 postdoctoral scholars, among whom 1055 have left the postdoctoral station and 355 are currently registered. To enhance the postdoctoral program management, the University has adopted a centralized approach to manage postdoctoral scholars' registration, leaving, funding application and daily administration. Different departments at the University support and cooperate with each other, and have established a complete and highly efficient system of rules and regulations.It is worth mentioning that the number of doctoral-level disciplines had increased from 22 to 36 within  just nine months, from December 31 2010 to September 1 2011.

To better serve the socio-economic development and to strengthen the university and industry collaboration, the University develops enterprise postdoctoral working stations with relevant industries. Currently, the University has established collaboration with more than 100 companies and enterprises and has recruited 325 postdoctoral scholars among whom 83 are currently registered. ------Bao Steel Group Corporation, Shanghai Bell Co. Ltd., Guosen Securities, Shanghai Talent Development Center of Lujiazui Financial City, Shanghai Futures Exchange, Shanghai Financial Futures Exchange, Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Shanghai Guangming Dairy Co. Ltd., etc.

The postdoctoral programs not only develop potential forces for the University's teaching and research teams, but also provide a large batch of outstanding personnel for regional development in China, to meet the urgent demand for highly-skilled and innovative workforce.
